Rays Vs. White Sox: Game One Diary

Stankevitz was quick to point out that Sox relievers Matt Thornton, Octavio Dotel, and Scott Linebrink have combined to allow zero runs in the 7.1 innings pitched through the team’s first six games.

Rodriguez himself had a chance to drive in the go-ahead run in the 11’th, yet grounded out with a runner at third. The Yankees have had to welcome him back because they have few other big bats for these clutch situations, but he missed on his first big opportunity.

The sale jerseys can survive with a platoon of Brian Anderson and Dewayne Wise in center (with Anderson getting more playing time thanks to gold glove-caliber defense), but the lack of a “traditional” leadoff hitter will force Ozzie Guillen to get creative. In the end, I’d expect Chris Getz to get the majority of at-bats from the No. 1 spot in the order this year, but he may not slide in there until late April or early May, whenever Guillen realizes that he’s a better long-term option than Wise or Anderson.

The Tigers get their first look at Chicago’s Gavin Floyd Monday. The 26-year-old righty went 3-0 in five starts against Detroit in 2008. Chicago went on to win each of those five contests.

That’s not the point, though. What if this would have been a playoff game or even a World Series game? If this same instance took place in game seven of the world Series fans would want the call to be correct. It wouldn’t matter how the correct call would come to be.

The Giants averaged 27.1 putouts, the Tigers averaged 26.7 and the Pirates averaged 26.1. The team with the least number of putouts was the Cubs, Orioles, Nationals, Indians, Diamondbacks, Athletics, and Pirates.

Letting this all soak in, I sat down, leaned against the fence and watched people around me. What i saw throughout the game was more of a social atmosphere. If that was because it was MY first Spring Training game this year, or how it always is, I’ll find out on Friday, but I believe there is more of a social atmosphere, at least in left field, than in the left field bleachers at Wrigley. One friend even commented on that to me.
